Easy Closet Organizing Hacks

Having an organized closet can do wonders for your style game. Whether you’re looking to make room for new One Posh Closet fall purchases or simply need the space to view your carefully curated wardrobe, we’ve put together some of our favorite closet hacks that will help you style, sort, and find what you’re looking for with ease.

Purge

You’ve heard it time and time again. Whether you take the Marie Kondo approach or simply think practically about  a few questions (Do I feel great when I wear this? Have I worn it in the last year? Would someone else benefit by owning this?) you’ll find that freeing up space not only allows you to focus on the pieces you own that you already love, but it also leaves room for creativity, for getting strategic about what you still need, and removes the cluttered feeling that can seep into other areas of your life. Additionally, if you find that you never iron or dry clean, yet have chronically wrinkly pieces or items that require dry-cleaning, consider letting them go. That also goes for items that have holes, missing buttons, etc., that you don’t find worth immediate fixing - chances are that if it’s been in that imperfect state for more than a week or season, you don’t find it worth keeping.

Utilize Your Doors

The back of the door is a great, but normally wasted space; however, it’s actually a wonderful storage solution that works great for scarves, shoes, belts, ties, etc. A quick Google search for any of these “over the door” solutions will offer suggestions, but also nailing a wire-basket as a catch-all for pieces also saves the headache of mismatched socks or other pieces that don’t quite warrant a different space all their own.

Add a Garment Rack

Using a small garment rack or portion of your hanging closet space as a staging area can help you begin to put together looks as they come to mind. Not only can a garment rack help with staging, but it’s a great addition to your closet for extra fall or winter coats, pants you’d prefer to hang vs. fold, or transitional pieces that don’t need a permanent place in your wardrobe.

Standing laundry hampers

If you keep your soiled laundry in your closet, use an organized standing hamper system that allows you to sort your pieces. By using tall, slim hampers vs. the traditional low and wide basket, you take up less space and automatically can approach the dreaded laundry time with a bit less resistance knowing the sorting has already been done.

Bins & labels

You can get as detailed as you want with this, but by having a clearly organized and labeled bin system for any pieces that aren’t regulars in your rotation makes it simple to access what you need at a moment’s notice. You’ll avoid the giant bins full of unknown pieces and can quickly access that adorable LBD when you need it when your label hints that it lives there. Additionally, some find that jotting down a brief inventory on a piece of paper and adding to out of season or out of rotation bins is an even more efficient way to make sure you always know where your pieces have landed.

Invest in great lighting
